The “Underbelly” of Worlds in Congo Tales by Pieter Henket

The “Underbelly” of Worlds in Congo Tales by Pieter Henket

“I try to draw people in with lighting and composition, making a reality into a fantasy,” Pieter tells It’s Nice That about his creative process. It’s been close to a year since I discovered storytelling through photographs. Taking on this project, and searching for visual documentation of others’ realities has given me countless moments of shock and “oh my god”. When I came across Congo Tales, it was a bit after I discovered Cristina de Middel and her work in Nigeria. Seeing the “underbelly” of these worlds, I knew that there was so much more mystery to find in the archives of Africa.

“The photographic series captures the “cathedral of nature’s treasures” over a five year period. Involving the local Congolese communities in the Mbomo district of the Congo Basin, photographer Pieter Henket not only photographs the beauty of the Congolese landscape, but also its culture and people through Congo Tales.”  —via It’s Nice That
