“Ofege is our name” Recovering the “Try and Love” album by Ofege

“Ofege is our name” Recovering the “Try and Love” album by Ofege

Much of Nigeria’s history is not well documented, so what can be found is standard and/or minimal information. In the midst of my gaze at Nigeria’s 70’s Rock scene, I obviously came across Ofege and other funky collectives, like The Funkees. The instrumentals are moving and the guitar solos are electric. The collection of “teenage hippies” formed at the prestigious St. Gregory’s College in the Obalende area of Lagos, Nigeria. Members Berkley Jones, Dapo Olumide, Felix Inneh, M-Ike Meme, Melvin Ukachi, Olushoga Benson, and Paul Alade came together in the early 1970s. Their music is largely influenced by the guitar solos of Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, and the criss-cross rhythms of Osibisa.
